Zouk
Zouk – which means party – is a dance practiced in the Caribbean, most frequently at the Guadalupe, Martinica and San Francisco islands. Just like merengue, Zouk is danced changing the weight basically on the head of tempo.
In Brazil, Zouk rhythm is used to dance a 100% Brazilian dance. It comes from lambada, but with moves more suited to the tempo. Lambada was too fast and frantic, practically making it impossible for many moves that exist today.
Our school was one of the inventors of Zouk. Jaime Arôxa brought lambada to Rio in 1990 and from here came the best lambada dancers at the time, including Adilio Porto and Renata Pessanha. They opened their own school trying to develop more adaptable moves to this new way of dancing. A good part of this zouk wave is due, in the first moment to Jaime Arôxa, and in the second moment to Adílio Porto and the adepts that spread throughout Brazil.
